Before you actually open the case, you should unplug the power supply from the wall and make sure you wear your anti static tools to be properly grounded. Static electricity, even from your body, can seriously damage the components inside the computer if you are not careful enough. The best way to ground yourself is to use a wrist strap every time you open your computer or touch anything inside that is connected to the case or chassis. But you can achieve the same result by touching the chassis or the power supply unit each time before handling a component. This has been a traditional practice as a basic and manual tools by other technicians. Here is some example of anti-static wrist strap.

Before working and touching any components inside the computer, make sure you wear your wrist strap and connect the alligator clip to any metal part on your chassis or case.

For best result, you might want to invest and buy an anti-static mat so that you can just lay all your equipments and components down on the mat for easy working and to avoid damages on your stuff.
